Memorial Day at Dodson Creek

The Memorial Service at Dodson Creek Cemetery was a wonderful event thanks to the many people who participated and the 125 + people who attended. Donahue Bible, author of "Persia to Piedmont" told the stories of these 83 men from this area who enlisted with the Confederate Army, Company D of 31st (39th) TN Mounted Infantry. He told of Peter Kite who was shot clean through th head at Piedmont and lay on the field, mistaken for dead for 2 or 3 days. An angel of mercy found him and cleaned his wounds. He survived to come home to Hawkins County and lived for many more years. Parson James Smith told of hardships not only by the soldiers who trecked hundreds of miles subsisting on scarce rations but also the hardships and of those left behind. Their courage and convictions made them the heroes that they were. He asked if we were as strong in our convictions and faith today. The Ball family entertained with beautiful traditional Appalachian music. Bradford /Rose SCV Camp attended and formed an Honor Guard with volley and salute.

It was a beautiful day in a beautiful place. May all there rest in peace.
